New Delhi: The telecom department is in the grip of the demand of the Railways for free allocation of the most expensive and most expensive spectrum for 5G services in the growing technical life. The department says that if the demand for railways is considered, it will affect the modernization of mobile services across the country. While the railways argue that without the said spectrum, the Prime Minister's dream of rejuvenation of the railway will not be fulfilled. The railway has demanded 15 megahertz spectrum of 700 megahertz band from the Department of Telecommunications. The reasoning behind this demand is that the railways run 21 thousand passengers and goods trains on its 66 thousand route kilometers track and its vast network of more than 8000 stations, in which 2.2 crore people travel. In total, Indian Railways transport 8 billion passengers and 1 billion tons of goods to the destination every year.

According to the sources, at present, the Railways has got 1.6 megahertz (paired) spectrum of 900 megahertz band from the government to operate its GSM-R based network, but this will not work anymore. Currently, the railway uses 2G level GSM-R mobile system for radio communication between train to train and train to trackside. So far this system has been installed on 2500 route kilometers. On the rest of the network, 5 watt and 25 watt VHF sets are used. Both these systems are mainly voice based with almost no capacity for data handling.

It has been confirmed that the Department of Telecommunications objected to this demand of the Railways and said that the work of the Railways can also run from spectrum of 600 to 450-470 MegaHertz band. But 5G services cannot run without enough 700 Mega Hertz spectrum. It sought an opinion from the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) on this issue, on which the TRAI suggested giving at least 10 mega Hertz of spectrum free, justifying the demand of the Railways. But the Department of Telecommunications still cannot find itself in a position to meet the demand of Railways.
