New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a plea seeking deployment of central security forces for security during the elections to 106 municipalities of West Bengal. The BJP leaders had filed a petition seeking the deployment of central forces for security during the elections. Voting for 106 municipalities of West Bengal is scheduled to be held on February 27.

The Calcutta High Court had already ruled on the matter that only the state's Election Commission can make a demand for deployment of central security forces during the elections. Against this decision, the BJP leaders had moved to the Supreme Court. According to the report, a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Suryakant told senior advocate PS Patwalia, appearing in the court on the petition of BJP leaders Moushumi Roy and Pratap Banerjee, that, 'Sorry. We are not inclined to entertain this petition.'

Patwalia said that the previous phase of the body elections had witnessed large-scale violence and irregularities and the deployment of central forces would enable free and fair elections. In its order, the Calcutta High Court had asked the State Election Commissioner (SEC) to hold talks with the state Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police and officials concerned within 24 hours and decide whether there was a need to deploy central paramilitary forces to conduct peaceful elections.
