A well-marked low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a depression, reads the latest update from weather officials. This system is forecasted to make landfall between Vishakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, around midnight tonight, August 31, 2024.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the low-pressure area, which was initially observed off the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, has intensified as it moved west-northwest. The depression is expected to continue in this direction and impact the coastal regions of north Andhra Pradesh and adjacent south Odisha.

Residents of Odisha should prepare for isolated very heavy rainfall due to this weather system, with heavy rain expected to persist into September 1. The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, particularly in the southern districts of Gajapati, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Nabarangpur.

Additionally, the western districts of Nuapada, Kalahandi, and Bolangir, along with southern regions such as Kandhamal and Ganjam, may also experience severe weather conditions. The forecast includes heavy rainfall and thunderstorms for several areas including Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, and Bargarh on Sunday.

In response to the forecast, Odisha's Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) has instructed all district collectors to be on high alert and prepare for any potential impacts from the depression.
