London: In a momentous gesture of acknowledgement and contrition, Charles Gladstone, the great-great grandson of former British Prime Minister William Gladstone, publicly apologized for his family's historical involvement in slave ownership in Guyana. The solemn apology was delivered during the inauguration of the University of Guyana's International Centre for the Study of Migration and Diaspora on August 26, 2023.

Characterizing slavery as a "crime against humanity," Charles Gladstone emphasized its enduring repercussions that continue to reverberate globally. He candidly stated that the Gladstone family was "deeply ashamed" of their ancestor's complicity in slavery and expressed a heartfelt apology to the descendants of the enslaved individuals in Guyana.

However, the reception of the apology was multifaceted, capturing a range of emotions and perspectives. While some individuals greeted it as a vital stride towards accountability and reconciliation, others felt that the apology alone was insufficient. Calls for the British government to initiate reparations to the descendants of slaves gained traction among certain quarters, underscoring the magnitude of historical injustices.
