China's exports to Russia grow faster despite weaker demand elsewhere

MOSCOW: Despite the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, weak demand in other major economies and the threat of a global recession, China's exports to Russia grew more rapidly in October, while the growth of imports from Russia slowed from the previous month.

Shipments of Chinese goods to Russia rose 34.6 percent in dollar terms from a year earlier, sharper than a 21.2 percent gain in September, according to Reuters calculations based on Chinese customs data released on Monday. and marks double-digit growth for the fourth consecutive month.

Conversely, rising inflation, significant global interest rate hikes and a slowdown in the global economy have led to a decline in demand for Chinese goods in Europe and the US.

Although slower than the 55.2 percent growth recorded in September, imports from Russia rose 36 percent in October from a year earlier. These hikes come despite the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in China and weak domestic demand.

While Western countries have distanced themselves from Russia, China's senior diplomat Wang Yi said in a phone call with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in late October that China was ready to deepen its ties with Russia at all levels. and any attempt to obstruct the progress of both the countries. would be in vain.

In the months of January to October, bilateral trade grew by 33.1 per cent to $153.94 billion.
