Mumbai: Former Maharashtra CM and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has been elected Leader of Opposition in the state assembly. Earlier on Sunday, veteran Congress leader Nana F. Patole was declared elected unopposed as the 14th Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Sunday.
In the Maharashtra Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis said that, we had nominated Kishan Kathore as the candidate for the post of Speaker, but everyone urged us in the all-party meeting and it has been a tradition that the election of the Speaker has been uncontested. So, we accepted the demand of other parties and withdrew the name of our candidate. Earlier, Maharashtra BJP unit president Chandrakant Patil said that, we have kept the tradition of Maharashtra in mind, we should not put this post in any kind of controversy. There will be no election for the post of president.
He said that we have taken this decision in the party meeting. We have withdrawn the nomination papers of Kishan Kithori. Without opposition the Speaker will be selected for the post, 'Minister of Maharashtra Government Chhagan Bhujbal said that, the opposing party has taken back its candidate. The dignity of the post of president has been kept. Now the election for the post of president has been done without protest.
