New Delhi: Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken major action against IndiGo Airlines for refusing to board a disabled person from boarding a plane. The DGCA has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on the company. Indigo had stopped a differently-abled child from boarding the plane at Ranchi airport on May 7. Taking strict action on this, DGCA has imposed a fine of Rs 5 lakh on IndiGo.
The DGCA has also lashed out at the company over the incident. DGCA has said that the ground staff of the company could not handle a disabled child properly, on the contrary, it made the situation worse. In this case, they had to act more sensitively, which would simplify the process for that child and calm him down. But the company's employees could not do so, taking the reverse extreme step, finally preventing the passenger from boarding the plane.
The DGCA said that exceptional steps have to be taken in special circumstances, but the employees of the company could not fulfil the spirit and commitment of the Civil Aviation Requirements (Regulations) and failed to do so. In view of this, DGCA has decided to impose a penalty of Rs 5 lakh on the airlines. The penalty has been imposed keeping in view the provisions of the aircraft rules concerned.
