BHUBANESWAR: As many as 17 people have died of diarrhoea in seven districts of Odisha so far, Health Minister Naba Kishore Das told the Assembly on Monday.
Speaker Bikram Keshari Arukh directed him to make a speech before the house, in which he stated that 432 persons in the state have already contracted diarrhoea, of which 17 people have died.
The minister claims that the initial outbreak of diarrhoea occurred in Kashipur block of Rayagada district on July 13 and that up of this point, 159 people from 11 villages spread across 5 panchayats in the block have had the illness, of which 10 have passed away.
The sickness also claimed the lives of two people in the Jharsuguda district while only one death was reported in each of the following districts: Koraput, Nabarangpur, Sonepur, Nuapada, and Gajapati.
All impacted districts have dispatched rapid response teams to deliver care in a warlike manner. The minister said, efforts are being made to give people access to safe and clean drinking water.
He said that Rayagada has received the necessary medications and other supplies in sufficient amounts to combat the disease, and that every effort is being made to ameliorate the situation in the area. He expressed the hope that things will get better soon.
Three days before it was supposed to expire on August 4, the Speaker on Monday declared the Assembly's monsoon session adjourned sine die.
The session, which began on July 2 of last year, saw outbursts over a number of topics, including Adhi Ranjan Choudhury's "rashtrapatni" statement, Sonia Gandhi's summons from the ED in the National Herald case, the Supreme Court's criticism of BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma, and the chit fund scandal.
Of the eight bills that were submitted in the house, the assembly also approved seven of them. On the final day, a CAG report was presented.
