You ask any member of the Indian law community if they have heard of Goolam Vahanvati and the answer will always be yes. Regarded as a legal luminary across the Indian sub continent, Goolam didn’t only have a career full of achievements but also took part in some extremely high profile cases.

He was born to Essaji Vahanvati who was always a lawyer and was Goolam’s inspiration to study law. He would often sit in the court for hours as a kid and see his father fight cases. All through his college life, Goolam was a straight A student and when he became a junior lawyer at the Bombay High Court, he quickly racked up a reputation for being the go-to person.

In 1990, Goolam was promoted as a senior lawyer during which time he was a part of numerous cases and was gaining popularity for his work across India. In 1999, he was promoted as the Advocate general for the state of Maharashtra and in 2004, he became the Solicitor General of India until 2009.

In 2009, Goolam became the first ever Muslim person in India to become the Attorney General of India, the highest position in the Government law system.

He represented Maharashtra in the fake stamp paper scam. He also served as the defending lawyer during the reservation for OBC classes in higher secondary case.

Some more cases include the Rajiv Gandhi assassination, the Enron cases, the stock market scam and many others. A lot of the cases that Goolam was a part of, are still talked about.
