Mongia played its first international match in 2001 against Australia. At the same time, the last international match was played against Bangladesh in 2007 and the same year he also played his first-class match, after which he was also banned by the board for playing ICL. Mongia was a part of Team India in the 2003 World Cup. Dinesh played a total of 57 ODIs, in which he scored 1230 runs and also took 14 wickets in his ODI career.

Mongia's only T20 International match in his career was played against South Africa in Johannesburg and he also has only one ODI century named against Zimbabwe.
