RRR, the awaited pre-blockbuster from director S.S. Rajamouli, starring Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, and Alia Bhatt, has been postponed once again due to the threat presented by the Omicron form of COVID-19 and the effect it may have on cinemas running normally, particularly in the Hindi belt. Before RRR could be delayed for the umpteenth time, a media spoke with three of its pillars, S.S. Rajamouli, Jr. NTR, and Ram Charan, for an exclusive interview in which, among the many topics discussed, the discussion ventured deep into how the blockbuster filmmaker has balanced historical fans of India's freedom struggle with his own fantasy for creative freedom.

"Whether a tale is commercial or if it'll bring in all the money that's been put in is a whole other aspect," Rajamouli added, straddling both boats. That part remains the same for every picture, whether it's historical, fictional, or a blend of both - for me, that comes afterwards. For me, the first question is whether or if that storey excites me. Is it making me angry? Is this the type of tale I want to be a part of for the next 2-3 years? keeping everyone engaged and enthusiastic about it? If you respond yes to those questions, the commercial elements will fall into place without you having to think too hard about them. It's simply a matter of whether we're passionate about it or not.

"This is a completely fictitious tale, but based on actual characters – that's one type of experiment nobody has done here, in Indian cinema, at least in mainstream films," the avant-garde filmmaker said of RRR. So that's what we're doing: creating a completely fictitious storey based on real-life freedom fighters. That comes into my genre, I create the laws of my universe, and we control the show there, and that is really exciting to me."
