Karnataka: Disqualified rebel legislator arrives SC

NEW DELHI: In Karnataka, the rebel Congress and JD(U) rebel MLAs, who have been disqualified by the Vidhan Sabha Speaker, have demanded an early hearing from the Supreme Court. These MLAs have challenged the disqualification of Paisley in the court. A bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra, on behalf of the rebel MLAs, senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, referred the matter and requested for early listing. The bench said that a memorandum should be given to the Registrar in this regard.

Rohatgi told the bench that all these MLAs have been disqualified and their case should be selected for hearing on 19th of this month. The Speaker had disqualified 17 rebel MLAs before voting on the trust motion of the then CM HD Kumaraswamy on July 29. Kumaraswamy had resigned from his post after he failed to test power in the House and the BJP government led by BS Yeddyurappa was formed in the state.

Two rebel Congress MLAs Ramesh L. Jarkhiholi and Mahesh Kumathalli and an independent leader R Shankar were disqualified on July 25. The MLAs challenged the Supreme Court on July 29. The then Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar disqualified the other 14 rebel MLAs on July 28. The political fate of these MLAs is now decided by the Supreme Court.
