New Delhi: On the occasion of Diwali, President Ram Nath Kovind sent greetings to the people and urged them to pledge to protect the environment. The following is a rough translation of what the President tweeted in Hindi: "On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, I extend my greetings and best wishes to all of my countrymen. Diwali is a Hindu festival that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. Let us all come together to celebrate this festival in a clean and safe manner, and pledge to contribute to environmental protection," Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Diwali, wishing the nation "happiness, prosperity, and good fortune."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah conveyed his best wishes and said, "May this great festival of light and happiness illuminate everyone's life with new energy, light, health and prosperity."

On the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar, Lord Rama (the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu) is said to have returned from a 14-year exile during which he fought and defeated the demon king Ravan. In order to commemorate the "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance," people decorate their homes, exchange gifts, and offer prayers during the festival.
