Lucknow: The apex court has lifted the ban on playing DJs in Uttar Pradesh. In 2019, the Allahabad High Court banned DJ citing noise as the reason. The apex court today said that no such demand was made in the petition on which the order has been issued. The petitioner had raised the issue of noise in only one locality. But the High Court gave an order for the entire State. The affected parties were not even heard while doing so.

In August 2019, the Allahabad High Court passed a strong order on noise pollution on a petition filed by Sushil Chandra Srivastava of the Hashimpur area of Prayagraj. The petitioner had placed the matter of an LCD posted near his house during the Kanwar yatra before the court. It was reported that it rings DJ from 4 a.m. to 12 p.m. This upsets his 85-year-old mother. The high court, on its part, extended the petition and ordered the entire state. Describing the DJ as unpleasant for the ears and disturbing to the people, he directed all DMs not to issue licences for the same. Take legal action against those who play without a licenced DJ.

The apex court, while hearing a petition filed by about 1 dozen DJ operators in the state, held that the high court order violates the fundamental right to earn a living. A bench of Justices Vineet Saran and Dinesh Maheshwari granted relief to the DJ operators and asked them to follow the earlier directions given by the apex court on noise pollution. As per the rules framed by the state government, DJs should be played only with licences.
