Mermaids are known as mysterious creatures in folklore and myths around the world. They are depicted as half human and half fish. But do they really exist? Let's find out how much is true about mermaids and what science says about them.

Beginning of mermaid stories:  Mermaids are mentioned in ancient civilizations. In Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations, mermaids are associated with the water god 'Enki'. There they were worshipped as goddesses of the powers of water. In Greek myths, mermaids were called 'Sirens', who used to lure sailors with their sweet music and drown them in the sea. Stories of mermaids are also found in European folklore, where they have been considered a symbol of love and sacrifice.

Mermaid Claims in History:  Many people in history have claimed to have seen mermaids. Fishermen and seafarers have reported from time to time that they have seen mermaids. The most famous claim is from the famous explorer Christopher Columbus, who wrote in his diary that he had seen mermaids in the Caribbean Sea. However, it was later discovered that he may have mistaken a sea cow (manatee) for a mermaid.

Discussion of mermaids on social media:  Even today, videos and pictures of mermaids keep going viral on social media. Some people claim that mermaids really exist, and have been seen from time to time. However, there is no scientific evidence of these claims and most of the pictures and videos are edited.

Science's View:  According to science, the existence of mermaids is not possible. Despite all the studies done on marine life, scientists have not yet found any creature that looks like a mermaid. Scientists believe that due to the mysteries and imaginations of the sea, people mistake marine creatures for mermaids. For example, dugongs, manatees and some types of seals are often mistaken for mermaids. In conclusion, stories of mermaids are the heritage of ancient civilizations, but according to science, their existence is just a myth.
