TLC in typical slang translates to ‘tender loving care’, and it is only befitting that you treat your body to the same, in terms of your diet! The TLC diet aims to do just that – except, its full form is actually Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes. As the name suggests, this is a long term diet that involves changing your lifestyle and eating habits towards a more therapeutic way of life.

So what purpose does the TLC diet serve, and what can you eat on this diet? It is mainly aimed at a heart-healthy lifestyle, which in turn helps in lowering cholesterol, blood pressure, chances of heart disease and stroke. It also helps lowering blood sugar levels, boosting metabolism and weight loss, reducing oxidative stress. Most nutritionists advocate half an hour of exercise to accompany this diet, for optimum benefits.

The TLC diet involves restricting cholesterol intake to 200mg a day, in the form of eggs, dairy (opt for fat-free or low-fat versions whenever possible), fish and poultry. In terms of fat intake, unsaturated fats are preferred, saturated fats should be had in very limited quantities, and trans fats should be avoided completely! Avoid red meat, processed foods and fried food. The diet needs to be fibre-rich, so opt for plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to be included in your diet, as well as whole grains, nuts and seeds.
