Doctors in the US have achieved great success. Doctors have performed a successful transplant of the ear with a 3D printed technique using the cells of a 20-year-old girl. This is the first case of a "bioprinted living tissue implant" in the world. The ear is implanted in such a way that it matches the other ear in shape and appearance and looks like a natural ear.

According to the media report, Alexa, who lives in Mexico, was born with Microtia. Microtia is a rare birth defect due to which the outer part of the ear becomes small and wrong. It also affects the ability to hear. About 1,500 babies are born with this defect each year in the U.S. 3DBio Therapeutics is a New York-based regenerative drug company that is conducting early-stage clinical trials with individuals with microtia. It began work on Alexa's ear implant in collaboration with the Microtia-Congenital Year's Deformity Institute in Texas. Subsequently, Dr. Arturo Bonilla, a pediatric ear reconstruction surgeon in San Antonio, was contacted.

Doctor Arturo Bonilla reconstructed the ear using the Auroino implant. They performed an ear transplant surgery of the young woman by removing half a gram of cartilage from the Microtia ear remains and then sent it to 3DBio Therapeutics in Long Island City, Queens with a 3D scan. Prior to this, they isolated Alexa's chondrocytes, which are the cells responsible for cartilage formation, from a tissue sample and were grown in nutrient solutions, turning them into billions of cells. Thereafter, these were inserted into a special 3D bio-printer with a syringe and converted into a small rectangular shape that was similar to the patient's healthy ear. Now, Dr. Bonilla implanted the ear under the skin just above Alexa's jawline. He tightened the skin around the implant to form the shape of an ear. Alexa has been very happy since this transplant.
