In India, people call it 'Kalounji', it is a normal ingredient of the Indian kitchen. Though these onion seeds do not belong to the onion family. They belong to the same family of black cumin. They are also called as black onion seed, black caraway, etc.
Onion seed composes of 38% of the oil that is responsible for its aromatic 
flavour. The seeds are used as flavouring agents while cooking. They need to be heated to intensify their aroma. The seeds are also added to various forms of bread like naan, paratha, chapatti, etc. In few parts of the world, onion seeds are also used to season fish.
This amazing ingredient also has various nutritional values. Let's have a look at some of them:

1. Black onion seeds are rich in dietary value. The seeds contain amino acids, proteins, and several essential minerals.
2. Onion seed oil is known for its medicinal value. The oil is said to be the best cure for several body ailments.
3. One teaspoon of kalonji oil is an excellent medicine for joint pains, arthritis, indigestion, obesity, etc.

*Note: In Islam, it is believed that Prophet Muhammad stated black onion seed as a treatment for every disease except death.
