WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has said that the US is ready to help meet India's defence requirement with modern technologies and logistical equipment. At the same time, it warns that India's purchase of a long-range "S-400 missile defense system" from Russia could have an impact on cooperation. The Trump administration's statement came after a similar warning given by a top U.S. State Department official a few weeks ago.

It is worth mentioning here that the official had said that India's purchase of missile systems from Russia would have "serious implications" on Indo-US defence relations. Significantly, the S-400 is Russia's most modern ground-to-air long-range missile defense system. China became the first country to enter into a contract with the government to purchase the mechanism in 2014.

The "S-400" air defense mechanism agreement was signed between India and Russia in a five billion dollar air defense mechanism agreement after discussions between PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin in October last year. Briefing the House Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs for Asia, Pacific and Nuclear Non-Proliferation, Special Officer of the Ministry of External Affairs Alice G. Wells said that the US now conducts the largest military exercise with India than any other country.
