New Delhi: A national anti-tobacco organisation has requested Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan to withdraw from an ad encouraging Pan Masala. He appealed to Big B that if they do so, their move will go a long way in keeping the youth away from tobacco addiction.

Writing a letter to Amitabh Bachchan on Thursday, Dr Shekhar Salkar, chairman of the NOTE on the issue, said that the veteran actor should distance himself from 'surrogate' pan masala advertisements and at the same time support the anti-tobacco movement to keep the youth away from such addiction. Dr Salkar wrote in the letter that a recent study has shown that betel nut substances can turn into carcinogens in the body, which can lead to mouth cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) accept scientific evidence that the consumption of pan masala is harmful to humans.

He also wrote in the letter that, as an oncologist and a member of the NGO working in the field of tobacco cessation, I am ready to go against such advertisements made by various influential and famous Bollywood actors like Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Ranveer Singh.
