Don't fall prey to easy online loan scams: Nagaland Police

The Nagaland Police  has warned people to be wary of simple internet loan scams perpetrated by con artists acting as representatives of reputable banks or financial institutions offering low-interest loans. The fraudsters contact the victims by SMS, e-mails, or phone calls offering loans, according to the police on Saturday. They introduce themselves as officials, representatives, or agents of reputable banks or financial organisations.

On the pretext of processing the loan, soft copies of papers such as ID and address proof, PAN card, bank account data, account statement, copy of the cancelled check, and income details (payslips, IT returns) are sought.

The scammers then give the victim a bogus loan approval paperwork and ask him to pay the processing charge before disappearing. Another online loan method is where loans are approved instantly via private loan apps without much verification, but after the loan is taken out, the scammers gain access to the victim's contact list and personal information, which is then used to harass the victims and their references, even blackmailing them with their information.

Genuine loan providers, according to the police, will never give loans without verification and following the RBI's standards. They recommended the public to check the qualifications of loan providers before applying for such loans and to get information from their local police station.

Meanwhile, two NSCN (Nikki) cadres were detained in Mokokchung with the help of Dimapur police on allegations of extortion money from a JCB owner. According to a delayed report released on Saturday, they were also in possession of a.32 pistol and seven live bullets. Wapang Imchen, a self-styled NSCN (Nikki) 'tatar' from the Ao area, and self-styled 'leacy' Meyiwapang Aier were detained.

A case was filed at Changtongya police station in Mokokchung district based on a report that miscreants seeking extortion money had robbed the keys of a JCB engaged in earth cutting activity.
