Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday (November 14) heard a suo motu PIL on the Morbi bridge collapse. Meanwhile, the court has strongly reprimanded the state government and Morbi Municipal Corporation for the flaws found in issuing tenders. The court said the Morbi municipality need not show smartness.

A bench headed by Chief Justice (CJI) Arvind Kumar asked, 'Why was a new tender not issued even after the contractor's term expired on June 15, 2016? How much generosity was shown by the state towards a person without a tender? The court said that the state should tell the reasons why legal action was not initiated against the chief officer of the municipal body.' The court also asked the state government whether a job can be given as help to the family members of those who were the sole earners of their families, but died in the accident. At the same time, the counsel for the State Human Rights Commission told the court that it is being verified whether compensation has been given to the concerned families or not.

The next hearing on this matter in the High Court will now be held on November 24. The bench has questioned on what basis the contractor was allowed to operate the bridge for three years after the first agreement was over. The court said that these questions should be answered in the affidavit during the next hearing, which will be after two weeks.
