Creating a historical show Ramayana for veteran director Ramanand Sagar was never easy. He worked hard to bring this show to the public. Initially, everyone refused to give funds for the Ramayana. But despite all the hurdles, the show was made and it created history. Ramanand Sagar's son Prem Sagar has written his father's biography. In which he told about the unheard aspects of Ramanand Sagar's Journey. In it, Prem Sagar revealed that Doordarshan did not like the pilot episodes of Ramayana. The pilot episodes of Ramayana were telecast on 25 January 1987.

These pilot episodes were prepared in just 2 weeks. Many internal people of Doordarshan found these pilot episodes to be bad. Ramanand Sagar got a call from Doordarshan's office. It was said that he can present the pilot episode of Ramayana within two weeks. Ramanand Sagar said yes in response. But Prem Sagar found it impossible to do it. Prem Sagar told Ramanand that it is not possible to do so at all. We shot 4 episodes."

But it was impossible to convert them into pilots. It required a lot of work and we had less time. All four episodes were cut, then all were made into single episodes. The pilot episode was telecast on 25 January. The show started earning record-breaking TRP after being on air. Ramayana was making a splash not only in the country but also abroad. Due to the tremendous TRP, the channel had no option but to sit silent."
