Taipei: India's DP Manu secured the gold medal in the men's javelin throw event at the Taiwan Open 2024, held in Taipei on Saturday. Manu achieved a remarkable throw of 81.58 meters, marking his best effort in the final attempt of the competition. The Taiwan Open is a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level meet, offering crucial ranking points.
Manu's performance unfolded with an initial throw of 78.32 meters, followed by a 76.80 meters throw in his second attempt. He progressively improved with throws of 80.59 meters and 81.52 meters in his third and fifth attempts, respectively. Although his fourth attempt was invalid, Manu finished strongly to secure the top position.
Despite his success, Manu's performance fell short of his personal best of 84.35 meters. His season-best effort of 82.06 meters, achieved last month at the Federation Cup in Bhubaneswar where he finished second behind Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, also remains superior.
Manu, who placed sixth at the World Championships last year, is still aiming to qualify for the Paris Olympics, with the qualification mark set at 85.50 meters. Currently, Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena have already secured their places in the Olympics.
