Gynecological health is essential for every woman. Hence, most gynecologists emphasize regular checkups to stay healthy and safe from most critical illnesses. In addition, with increasing stress and fast-paced lifestyles, making time to look after health should take top priority.

Dr Hrishikesh Pai of Budget Fertility Center, Mumbai, is one of the leading gynecologists of Mumbai who has treated innumerable women patients for various issues especially infertility for more than three decades. He strikes home a point when he states, 'Women should take utmost care of their health. In fact, I stress that they should pay extra attention to their health as the entire family's well-being is dependent on them. Therefore, I advise my patients to seek an annual checkup and spend the rest of the year worry-free, if all is well. '

He moves on to elaborate on the key points that the patients could discuss with the gynecologist for their wellbeing are -

The health, family, and medication history: The gynecologist needs to know a patient's health, family, and medication history during their first meeting. It is essential to learn about a patient's background and know if a patient suffers from any diseases or conditions. Also, if they are taking any medications or supplements or using birth control and if the patient's family has a history of disease or condition.

Discussion on patient's sexual history:  The patient should share details such as the number of sexual partners and their age, when he/she had sex for the first time as they are important as they help to determine the chances of acquiring sexually transmitted infections (STIs). So, to enjoy good sexual and reproductive health, the gynecologist needs to ascertain whether screening for STIs is essential or not.

Enjoying safe sex and Birth control practices: There are many options available, including birth control pills, condoms, IUDs, which promise safe sex and keep unwanted pregnancies at bay. But choosing the right one requires the guidance of an experienced gynecologist. Other factors considered include age, sexual activity, pregnancy plans, etc. Discussing these factors with the gynecologist and choosing the most suitable birth control method is advisable.

Sex and its experiences:  With progressing age, the patient is likely to have painful sex or less appeal or lower libido because of physical changes in the body. It is normal to experience vaginal dryness, pain and even discomfort but its cause must be diagnosed and resolved.

The Menstrual Cycle:   The menstrual cycle of the patient also needs evaluation especially heavy or scanty periods, number of days, pain during the menstrual cycle and hormonal changes before and after the period. Any irregularities experienced require careful evaluation and treatment. Also, a single drop of blood noticed between two menstrual cycles or after the menopause stage needs further checking as they could indicate serious gynecological issues.

Gynecological Screening Tests: Screening tests and regular medical checkups help patients to stay healthy and keep them safe from severe health conditions. With regards to gynecological health, an annual pelvic examination after the age of 21 years is essential, along with a Pap smear test done to detect the human papillomavirus (HPV) which causes cervical cancer or cancer of the penis, vagina, vulva, anus and also back of the throat. Similarly, screening for breast cancer is a must for women above 40 years or those with a family history of cancer and a host of other risk factors. In addition, the patient needs to seek annual checkups and openly discuss their issues with the treating gynecologist.

Pregnancy and its Planning: At times, patients wish to discuss their pregnancy goals and the available options and suitable approach is best discussed with a gynecologist. The points of discussion could be conception timetable & methods, saving the eggs for future, issues in conceiving and options of suitable infertility treatment, donor eggs/sperms, genetic testing & counselling, natural labour and delivery, complications during delivery, etc, need to be discussed openly understanding the pros and cons available for a joyful parenthood experience.
