New Delhia: The Indian Excellence Award for Best Anti-Drug Campaigner of India was given to Dr. Yusuf Merchant, Founder President, Drug Abuse Information Rehabilitation & Research Centre, for his outstanding contribution to drug prevention and rehabilitation in India.

The Drug Abuse Information Rehabilitation & Research Centre is one of India's leading non-governmental organisations (NGOs) dedicated to substance abuse prevention, including drug addict rehabilitation, drug demand reduction strategies, and research into the causes and effects of drug abuse.

Dr. Yusuf Merchant has selflessly dedicated his life to the anti-drug movement for over three decades, so the award appears to have been well-considered. He has held seminars/workshops for Substance Abuse (3500) and HIV (537) for police officers (Jr. and Senior Management), Customs and Excise officials, students from graduate and post-graduate institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, labour union personnel, taxi and truck drivers, and commercial sex workers across the country. So far, his public awareness campaigns have reached over one million people.

Dr. Merchant, as the head of the Drugfree India Movement, devised a Specific Intervention Strategy for schoolchildren called Drug Resistance Education, which has been implemented in over 1600 Mumbai schools.
