Sanaa: A drone attack killed three people suspected of being members of the Al Qaeda terror group's Yemeni branch, according to a military official. "A vehicle passing on a road between the provinces of al-Bayda and Shabwa in the country's southern half was struck by missiles launched by a US drone," according to sources. Three persons were killed and two civilians were injured as a result of the bombing, he claimed.

Al Qaeda has an active presence in the mountainous parts of Shabwa and other violent neighbouring provinces, according to the official. The Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) network, which is located in Yemen and predominantly operates in the country's eastern and southern regions, has been responsible for a number of high-profile attacks against security personnel.  Years of brutal struggle between the Yemeni government and Houthi rebels have allowed the AQAP to develop its footprint in the war-torn Arab country.

AQAP has carried out operations against both Huthis and government forces, as well as sporadic strikes abroad, including as the 2015 attack on the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.The fighting has killed tens of thousands of people and produced the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with millions of people displaced.
