Anwar Ashwathama of the Mahabharata was a warrior who was capable of fighting the entire war on his own and is said to be wandering around the earth even today because of the curse of Lord Krishna. From time to time, people have been giving evidence of this, and so do the news come from time to time. One of which is a story attached to the Asirgarh Fort.

The Asirgarh Fort is located at an altitude of 750 ft above sea level at the peak of Satpura Hills in the north at a distance of about 20 km from Burhanpur in the state of Madhya Pradesh and is believed to be about 80 km from Burhanpur Khandwa and is believed to be the Shivmandir of Asirgarh Fort. Ashwatthama is the first to come to worship every day and meeting fresh flowers and gulal offerings every morning on the Shivling is also a mystery.

It is said that by bathing in a pond in the fort, Ashwatthama goes to offer prayers at the Shiva Temple and, surprisingly, the pond at the top of the mountain never dries up in the hot summer of Burhanpur. The temple is also built. The temple is surrounded by trenches from all sides. It is quite popular to note that one of the trenches that surround the temple has a secret passage through the Khandav forest (Khandwa district) directly towards the temple and this is the way in which the Ashwathama temple comes in and worships.
