New Delhi: More than 1275 people have died till Sunday due to a powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Hai Ti on Saturday. Rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing amid fears of the coming storm and torrential rains. At least 5,700 people have been injured and thousands rendered homeless due to the earthquake. People are forced to stay in the open even after the scorching heat and people are waiting for treatment in hospitals littered with patients.

The crisis could deepen earlier this week, as Hurricane Grace could knock into Haiti by Monday night. The US National Hurricane Center said on Sunday that the storm will not be very powerful, but meteorologists have warned that there is a risk of heavy rains, floods, and landslides. Several cities have been almost completely destroyed by the earthquake in the southwest part of Haiti on Saturday and rescue operations are also being affected due to landslides.

The earthquake has added to the woes of Haiti's people who have been badly affected by the coronavirus epidemic. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was about 125 kilometers from the capital Port and Prince. Tremors were also felt here on Sunday.
