Gol Gappe, a popular street food, is known to make mouths water at its mere mention. Many people enjoy it as an evening snack, while some eat it to curb their evening hunger. This street food is known by various names across India: some call it "pani puri," and others refer to it as "puchka." Despite its popularity, did you know that in Karnataka, 22% of pani puri samples failed to meet the quality standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)? Here’s what the report reveals.

Report Findings
According to a report by Deccan Herald, about 22% of pani puri sold in Karnataka did not meet FSSAI safety standards. Officials collected 260 samples statewide, of which 41 were deemed unsafe due to the presence of artificial colors and carcinogenic substances. Additionally, 18 samples were of poor quality and unsafe for consumption. Many samples were found to be stale and unfit for human consumption. Chemicals such as Brilliant Blue, Sunset Yellow, and Tartrazine were found in the samples, which can cause various health problems.

Previous Bans in Karnataka
The Karnataka government had previously banned the use of the food coloring agent Rhodamine-B, which was used in dishes like Gobi Manchurian and cotton candy.

How to Check for Adulteration in Pani Puri Water
Each vendor prepares pani puri water differently, but you can easily detect adulteration by observing the color. Tamarind water should be light brown, while coriander-mint water should be deep green. If the water appears lighter, it may contain acids. Acidic adulteration can make the water taste bitter and cause immediate stomach discomfort.

In conclusion, while gol gappe remains a favorite snack for many, ensuring its safety and quality is essential. The findings highlight the need for stringent monitoring and enforcement of food safety regulations to protect public health.
