Vijayadashami also known as Dussehra, Dasara or Dashain is a major Hindu festival celebrated every year at the end of Navratri. It is celebrated on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin, the seventh month of the Hindu luni-solar calendar, which usually falls in the Gregorian months of September and October. Vijayadashami is celebrated for different reasons and is celebrated differently in different parts of the Indian subcontinent.

In the southern, eastern, northeastern and some northern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, which commemorates the victory of the goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura to restore and protect the dharma. Alternatively, it symbolizes reverence for an aspect of the goddess, such as Durga or Saraswati. In Vijayadashami celebrations, on Dussehra, huge effigies of Ravana, symbolizing evil, are lit with fireworks, symbolizing the destruction of evil. The festival also begins preparations for the important festival of lights, Diwali, which is celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami.
