Earthquake tremors in Turkey, death toll crosses 40

Ankara: The death toll in the earthquake in Turkey has increased even more. So far more than 40 people have died here due to earthquake. According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD), the number of people died in the devastating earthquake in Turkey's western Izmir province has been 42.

On Friday, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Izmir, affecting more than a dozen buildings. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said late Saturday that the number of people died in the earthquake has gone up to 37. More than 880 people were injured in this incident. AFAD said on Sunday morning that 42 people have lost their lives according to the latest figures. Rescue teams are working on the wreckage of nine destroyed buildings in Izmir.

Izmir Mayor Tunk Soyer said there were reports of about 20 buildings collapsing in the city. The governor of Izmir said that 70 people were safely evacuated from the rubble. Medical students were in the Guzelbeck area of Izmir at the time of the Ilke-side earthquake. He said, "I have a lot of earthquake experience. So initially I did not take it seriously. But, this time it was scary". He said tremors were felt for at least 25–30 seconds.
