A powerful earthquake struck southwest of the country near the resort of Acapulco on Tuesday night, jolting buildings in Mexico City and sending residents rushing into the streets. A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit 11 miles (17.7 kilometres) northeast of Acapulco, Guerrero, according to the USGS.

The quake, which was first recorded by the USGS at a magnitude of 7.4, triggered rockfalls and landslides onto roadways, according to media reports. Buildings in Acapulco were also damaged by the quake, according to media reports. There were no initial reports of serious damage in Mexico City, according to Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum.

Lights went out in Mexico City's Roma Sur neighbourhood, and frightened residents ran out. Residents gathered together in the rain, clutching little children or pets, unable to return home in the dark. The USGS said the quake was very shallow, only 7.8 miles (12.5 km) below the surface, which would have amplified the shaking effect.
