An Earthquake of magnitude 7.1 on Richter scale struck the Mexico city yesterday in which more than 140 people lost their lives. The earthquake caused serious damage to lives and property in the region. In the early afternoon, the earthquake occurred.

Rescue crews and volunteers are still digging out people trapped beneath mounds of rubble. Several buildings in Mexico City were severely damaged. The death toll is however likely to rise.

Morelos Governor Graco Ramirez earlier said on Twitter that at least 42 people had died in his state south of Mexico City. 

The National Coordinator for Civil Protection Luis Felipe Puente said a total of at least 138 people died.

US President Donald Trump tweeted  "God bless the people of Mexico City. We are with you and will be there for you."

The prime minister of Canada Justin Trudeau tweeted "Devastating news from Mexico City. My thoughts are with those affected by today's earthquake - Canada will be ready to help our friends."
