The 61-year-old man is a plant mycologist. He also complained of a persistent cough, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, and lethargy or fatigue for about three months. In the course of the investigation, he was found to be suffering from a fungus. He is the first person in the world to have an infection that affects plants. Researchers say this shows how plant infections can spread to humans through continuous exposure to plant fungi.

A CT scan revealed that mycologists live among fungi and work there. The Journal Medical Mycology Case Report says that the doctors told them that he (the victim) had been working on mushrooms and other plant fungi for a long time in connection with his research.
