New Delhi: On Tuesday, the Election Commission (EC) has given a clean chit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his "Corrupt No. 1" remark against former PM Rajiv Gandhi. On Sunday, the Congress party had moved the EC demanding action against PM Narendra Modi alleging poll code violation over the remark.

“The speech mentioned in this complaint has been examined with a view to identifying instances of violation of the model code of conduct. Prima facie, we did not figure out any literal violation of MCC as given in Election Commission of India instructions. The case is therefore disposed off," EC said.

In its complaint, Congress had contended that former PM Rajiv Gandhi was given clean chit in cases against him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi insulted Bharat Ratna awardee in his election rally.

Several Congress leaders met the Commissioners, demanding immediate action against PM for the remarks. Speaking to media, Abhishek Singhvi had stressed that a petition against Rajiv Gandhi was dismissed by the Supreme Court in 2018, therefore, PM Modi misled the nation with the remark.

"We want to ask, who is telling a lie, who is indulging in misleading campaign, and distortion of facts," he had said

Last Saturday, at an election rally in Uttar Pradesh, Prime Minister Modi said that the life of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's father and former PM Rajiv Gandhi had ended as "bhrashtachari (corrupt) number 1".

Responding to his remark, Rahul Gandhi had sent a huge hug and a warning on Karma. "Modi Ji, The battle is over. Your Karma awaits you. Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won't protect you. All my love and a huge hug," Rahul tweeted.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi had said that people of Amethi will give a befitting reply to PM Modi over his remarks.

So far the Congress has made 11 complaints with the EC against the PM and as many as six cases have been cleared by the Commission.
