Assam: The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a warning to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday (October 27) for violating the model code of conduct during campaigning for the October 30 assembly by-elections.

The opposition Congress had previously filed two complaints against Sarma, who is the BJP's top election campaigner. It demanded that he be barred from campaigning.

The Election Commission sent Sarma a notice on Monday, requesting that he file an explanation by Tuesday. The commission stated after Sarma's "unconditional apology" that he "acted in violation" of the model code of conduct. "As a result, the commission issues a warning to him, advising him to be more cautious and exercise restraint."

After two lawmakers and three others,  died of Covid-19-related complications, two from the Congress and one from the All India United Democratic Front, resigned to join the Bharatiya Janata Party, by-elections for five assembly seats in Assam are being held.
