On Monday, the Election Commission of India will convene the senior officials from the Union Health Ministry to review the present Covid19 situation in five poll-bound states, including Manipur. According to a media report, the Election Commission would review the present Covid19 situation in poll-bound states and request updates from Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan on the new Covid19 version Omicron.

Senior health officials are expected to be advised by the EC in terms of improving the Covid protocols for election campaigns, polling days, and other associated issues.  In 2022, assembly elections are scheduled in five states: Uttar Pradesh, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Goa, and Punjab, with the poll timetable expected to be released in the first week of January, according to sources.

According to reports, the Chief Election Commissioner and other officials would travel to Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday to assess the state's election preparedness. An Allahabad High Court panel on Thursday ordered the government to reconsider its decision to postpone the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh for a month or two and to ban all political gatherings, citing the daily rise in Covid19 cases. Within 24 hours on Sunday, India recorded a total of 6,987 new positive cases.

There were 162 more deaths reported throughout the country, bringing the overall death toll to 4,79,682. According to statistics from the Union health ministry, 422 Omicron infections have been detected, with 17 states reporting the novel Covid19 variant.
