New Delhi: The Election Commission has announced the dates for assembly elections in three northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Assembly elections in Tripura will be held on February 16. Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to polls on February 27. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the term of the legislative assemblies of three states - Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura - is going to end on March 12, March 15, and March 22, 2023, respectively. Results will be declared on March 2, 2023.

The year 2023 is described as the year of assembly elections. Besides Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland, assembly elections are also due in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan later this year. While Tripura is ruled by the BJP, Meghalaya, and Nagaland are ruled by the BJP in an alliance. Overall, this election is a question of credibility for the Bharatiya Janata Party. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP's top leadership in the BJP's national executive had indicated that election dates could be announced anytime in the Northeast.
