Manila: As the first group of more than 400 Filipinos crossed into Egypt on Thursday, amid a ceasefire between warring Sudanese factions, authorities announced that more than 400 Filipinos had been evacuated from Sudan.

According to the most recent estimates from the WHO, fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces broke out on April 15 and resulted in at least 459 deaths and over 4,000 injuries.

When the army and RSF declared the ceasefire on Monday, foreign nations started evacuating their citizens. Major airports turning into battlegrounds have complicated the evacuation efforts, which have also been hurried because the cease-fire is set to expire on Friday.

The first group of Filipinos left the capital of Sudan, Khartoum, on Monday. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, 51 of them finally made it to Egypt's neighbour on Thursday morning after a lengthy bus ride. The head of the Philippine mission in Cairo, which has jurisdiction over Filipinos in Sudan, Ambassador Ezzedin Tago, welcomed them.

On Wednesday, a second group of Filipino nationals left Khartoum. 409 Filipinos were initially estimated to have been evacuated in total, but more have since been reported.

According to Eduardo De Vega, the DFA's Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs, "the number is closer to 450 now that they have crossed the border."

De Vega previously stated that many people living in Sudan lacked proper documentation, so the number of Filipinos seeking evacuation may still rise.

Susan Ople, the secretary for migrant workers, is currently in Egypt to organise the efforts to make sure Filipino citizens leave the nation.

She promised assistance to those whose passports were lost or expired in a televised press conference on Tuesday.

"Getting a security pass to cross from the Sudan side to Egypt is problematic... She added that the Philippine embassy was facilitating temporary entry for those lacking documents and that she was fairly certain that their border control was overburdened.

According to our conversation with Ambassador Tago, he doesn't believe they will be turned away or sent back.
