His body was then taken to hospital. It is worth mentioning that Mohammed Mursi was elected president of the country in 2012. The elections were held after the ouster of Egypt's long-time President Hosni Mubarak. Mursi was associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest Islamic organization, which has now been declared illegal.

The army then toppled Mursi in 2013 after large-scale protests and the Brotherhood was repressed. Several group leaders, including Mursi, were arrested by the army.
