cairo: Egypt's Education Minister, Reda Hegazy, has ordered an investigation into the collapse of a stair fence at a girls' preparatory school in Giza, which killed one student and injured 15 others.
According to reports, a section of a concrete stair fence collapsed as students rushed upstairs to their classrooms, prompting the police to respond.
Hegazy, in an official statement issued on Sunday, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased student and ordered an investigation into the incident.
The minister vowed "firm and urgent action against those responsible," according to the ministry's statement, and referred the head of the educational directorate, school principal, and school building supervisors to the relevant authorities for further investigation.
Hegazy also ordered a review of all school buildings across the country to ensure student safety. The results of the review will be included in a report to the ministry.
