The dates of assembly elections going to be held this year in Maharashtra and Haryana at four o'clock this evening can be announced. According to information received from the sources of the Election Commission, the election dates in both the states can be announced today.

The dates can be announced on Friday, so according to sources, the election will most likely be in October. In 2014, the Election Commission announced the dates for two state assembly elections on 12 September. Polling in these two states was held on October 15 in 2014 and the results came on October 19. According to the media report, the model code of conduct will be implemented in both states as soon as the Election Commission announces the dates. The Model Code of Conduct means that the current government cannot make any new announcements, nor implement new schemes or influence voters by exercising their authority in any way.

The Income Tax Department has appointed 110 IRS officers as expenditure observers to keep an eye on expenditure during the upcoming assembly elections in the state. Observers will be tasked to investigate the use of black money and other illegal greed during the election process in both states. These officers of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) will be posted in different assembly segments of both states. 2014 was a major setback for the Congress. Months after losing power at the Center, the party lost its government in Maharashtra.

The BJP registered a major lead in the state by winning 122 seats in the 288-seat assembly. BJP has formed a government in alliance with Shiv Sena. Like Maharashtra in 2014, Haryana assembly elections were also a stunner. Riding on the Modi-wave, the BJP managed to reach four to 47 seats in the neighboring state of Delhi. The Congress was reduced to only 15 seats, while Om Prakash Chautala's INLO was successful in only 19 seats.
