Lucknow: The Election Commission on Tuesday (January 18, 2022) warned the Samajwadi Party (SP) not to do so further in connection with a rally in Violation of Model Code of Conduct amid electoral turmoil in Uttar Pradesh. The Commission termed it as the SP's first mistake in this election and left it saying it would fully follow the corona guidelines during this period.

According to the report, the Election Commission in its order said that this is the first time that violation of the model code of conduct has been reported by the SP during the current round of elections. Therefore, the party has been asked to be careful in future, follow all the existing guidelines diligently and give instructions to all its party members. In view of the upcoming assembly elections in UP, thousands of crowds were gathered at the Samajwadi Party (SP) office in Lucknow on January 14, 2022, in the name of the digital rally. On that day, several MLAs including Swami Prasad Maurya and Dr Dharam Singh Saini, who were part of CM Yogi's cabinet, had joined the SP in the presence of Akhilesh Yadav.

The Lucknow police had then registered an FIR against the SP under the Section 144 Breaking and Epidemic Act. About 2500 activists were booked under the Epidemic Act and violation of Section 144 at Gautampalli police station. Lucknow Police Commissioner DK Thakur had said that a case has been registered against all of them. Action will be taken as directed by the Election Commission.
