New Delhi: The schedule for the proposed elections to 13 seats of the Rajya Sabha has been released. As per the schedule, biennial elections for 13 seats of the Upper House will be held on March 31. Rajya Sabha elections will be held in a total of 6 states. This includes 2 seats in Assam, 5 seats in Punjab, 3 seats in Kerala and  1 each in Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Tripura.

Among the members of the Rajya Sabha whose term is coming to an end include Ripun Bora, Anand Sharma, Sukhdev Singh, Partap Singh Bajwa, Naresh Gujral, Shamsher Singh, AK Antony. According to the Constitution, the maximum number of members in the Rajya Sabha has been fixed at 250, which provides for election to 238 members while 12 members are nominated by the President, with the term of one-third of the members ending every two years, after which elections are held for their seats. That is, every two years, one-third of the members of the Rajya Sabha change and not the House is dissolved. That is, the Rajya Sabha always remains.

The process of Rajya Sabha elections is different from lok sabha and assembly elections, as the tenure of its member is 6 years. In the Lok Sabha elections, the general public votes, but for the Rajya Sabha elections, the common man cannot vote, for this, only the people's representatives i.e. MLAs elected by the people vote.
