Amritsar: With the power cuts affecting cotton cultivation in Punjab, there is a lot of resentment among the farmers of the state towards the state government. In Khokar in Mukhtasar district, farmers have protested by burning an effigy of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. Farmers have claimed to have had power cuts for 6 to 10 hours a day. Apart from the power cuts, farmers are also quite upset due to the heat wave.

Farmers in the cotton belt of Punjab are extremely worried about not having adequate supply of electricity. Farmers have claimed that 6-10 hours long power cuts are being made every day, due to which they are facing problems in sowing cotton. The supply of canal water to Talwandi Sabo and Sangat Mandi areas is less. In such a situation, farmers have to depend on tubewells. Jasvir Singh, a farmer union leader, said the agriculture department had recommended sowing of cotton between April 15 and May 15. But if the power supply remains like this, sowing may be delayed. Farmers claimed that green fodder and vegetables are also getting spoiled due to the heat wave.

At the same time, paddy farmers are also worried about the power situation. They are worried that if the power supply is not enough, there may be problems when the paddy sowing season starts. On Thursday, the angry farmers had come to gherao the officials. Seeing the situation deteriorating, the employees had switched off the power supply for agriculture. The farmers had reached the PSPCL office at Jind in Bathinda district. BKU (Ekta-Sidhupur) leader Gurvinder Singh said that six hours of power supply was promised, but the agriculture sector was getting only two hours.
