BIHAR: The Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission (BERC) on March 23 announced an increase in electricity rates by 24.10 percent. The decision comes following the electricity entities had proposed to hike the rates by 40 percent and also to hike the fixed charges by over 2 times. The entities had made the proposal after an increase in the cost of power supply.

in addition to the increase in electricity prices per unit, the fixed charges will also rise. Shishir Kumar Singh, the head of the Bihar Electricity Regulatory Commission said.

After the electrical companies recommended raising rates by 40% and increasing fixed charges by more than two times, the decision was made.

The proposal was made by the electricity companies in response to an increase in the price of power delivery.

The fixed charges have increased by more than two times, and the number of power pricing slabs has gone from three to two.

At the moment, home customers in rural Bihar pay 6.10 rupees per unit for using 50 units of electricity, and the price increases to 6.40 rupees per unit for using more.

Also, the cost of power for city dwellers is $6.10 per unit for consumption up to 100 units, and $6.95 per unit for consumption above 100 units.

India's power consumption increased 10% to 1375.57 billion units (BU) from April to February of this fiscal year, exceeding the total amount of electricity delivered in 2021–2022.

According to official figures, 1245.54 BU of electricity were consumed between April and February 2021–2022.

Power usage for the entire fiscal year 2021–22 was 1374.02 BU, which is less than the 1375.57 BU measured from April 2022 to February 2023.

Analysts predict that power consumption will increase by double digits in the upcoming months due to anticipated historically high demand, particularly in the summer.

Peak power demand in the nation was predicted by the power ministry to be 229 GW in April of this year, up from 215.88 GW in the same month last year.
