USA: Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, tweeted on Saturday in response to a Fox News segment discussing the possibility of former US President Donald Trump being "handcuffed" and processed through the New York City court system. If the former president is arrested next week, he will win the 2024 election in a "landslip victory," Musk wrote.

Musk responded in a tweet to the Canadian lawyer @thevivafrei's similar but less fervent prediction that Trump would win re-election with a landslip victory.

It's a common belief, and one that Trump himself seems to share, that this scenario could help the former reality TV star win the presidency once more. On Truth Social on Saturday, he warned his followers of his impending arrest and exhorted them to "protest, take our nation back.

His post emphasises that the Manhattan District Attorney's office is talking about security for such a situation, which might imply that the authorities are concerned about Trump's supporters' reaction.

The expected indictment of the former president would be the first of its kind in US history, based on allegations of campaign finance violations. Even former President Richard Nixon, who resigned from office in the wake of the Watergate scandal, was not put on trial.

Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan district attorney, is accused by Trump's attorney of "weaponizing" the legal system by turning a misdemeanour charge that federal prosecutors did not deem deserving of prosecution into a felony. Before November 2024, if he is found guilty, he might be barred from the White House.

The New York Times expressed concern when the FBI conducted a nighttime raid on Trump's Mar-a-Lago Florida estate last summer, fearing that the agency's aggressive methods would enrage the former president's supporters, leading to electoral turmoil that would give Trump the 2024 presidential nomination on a silver platter and enable Republicans to take control of Congress.

The midterm elections didn't produce the partisan rout many on the right had hoped for, with the Senate remaining in Democratic hands even though Republicans did win back the House of Representatives. Even among members of his own party, the incumbent president Joe Biden's approval rating is near record lows, but in the majority of polls that compare him to Trump, Biden is still in the lead by a few points. Trump could easily cross the line with an arrest.
