Eminent Cartoonist Narayan Debnath, creator of 'Bantul The Great', dies at 97

Kolkata: Narayan Debnath, a 98-year-old acclaimed cartoonist who has immortalised fictional characters like "Batul the Great" and "Nante Fante," died today at a private super-specialty hospital in Kolkata. He has been seeking treatment for age-related diseases since December 24.

In January 2021, Narayan Debnath received the Padma Shri award.Aroop Roy, the State Cooperative Minister, alleged that "he had expressed a wish to hold the award." Following that, a top West Bengal minister personally handed over the Padma Shri award and citation to sick cartoonist Narayan Debnath in a local hospital, a year after the Centre bestowed the honour on him.

On Thursday, State Cooperative Minister Aroop Roy and Home Secretary B P Gopalika met with the ailing  artist and presented him with the medal and certificate.
