OTTAWA : Beginning in April, employers in Canada were actively looking to fill approximately one million vaccant positions, up 44.4% from the same time last year.

According to Statistics Canada, there were on average 1.1 unemployed people for every open position in April, down from 1.2 in March and 2.4 a year earlier, according to reports from Ottava.

The national statistical office stated that there are record numbers of open positions in numerous sectors as Canada's labour shortage patterns continue. Professional, scientific, and technical services, transportation and warehousing, finance and insurance, arts, entertainment, and recreation, as well as real estate and rental and leasing, saw record-high job vacancies in April, the office said.

In the manufacturing sector, there were 90,400 open posts in April, an increase of 30.7% from April 2021 and 7.3% from March. Employers were actively looking to fill 153,000 open positions in the lodging and food services sector in April, which was essentially unchanged from the previous month.

While job openings in the healthcare and social support sector declined from their peak of 147,500 in March 2022 to 125,200 in April, they were still 21.3% greater than in April 2021.
